Food as a Right

Dear Community,

For almost 20 years, Salvation Farms has been deeply rooted in Vermont’s rural communities, making a real, tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors. Farms are evolving, compelling us as an organization to transition toward a future where we are led by the communities we serve. This transition requires us to dig even deeper—to be more intentional, more collaborative, and more determined than ever to sustain and grow our organization. It is this commitment to be led by our community that informs our work each and every day.

That’s why for this year’s annual appeal we are highlighting the voices of the Salvation Farms’ team: Tony, Hillary, Martha, Ciara, Megan, Jen and Sean. They bring life to our mission and values. Alongside our board and volunteers, they serve as the foundation for our unwavering, ongoing work. And they are critical to connecting farms to institutions and charitable food sites that support food access for Vermonters.

Our shared efforts will always be centered on feeding people and supporting farms; beyond that, it’s about nourishing a sense of sustained optimism, human dignity, and environmental resiliency. On a practical level, we glean or purchase surplus food from Vermont farms—food that may not reach traditional markets but is still fresh, nutritious, and delicious. Instead of letting this food go to waste, we bring it back to the community, ensuring that everyone, regardless of income, can access food that reflects their culture, tastes, and needs.

Because at Salvation Farms, we believe that food is not just a necessity—it’s a right.

By donating to Salvation Farms, you’re doing more than just giving money. You’re helping to preserve Vermont’s farming heritage. You’re ensuring that local families have food on their plates. You’re empowering volunteers to learn new skills and give back. And you’re investing in a future where our communities are stronger, healthier, and engaged in Vermont’s food system.

Today, we invite you to stand with us and continue on this shared journey. Always know that you are a part of this wholehearted community. And understand that our continued work depends on the generosity of Salvation Farms’ network of friends and neighbors, both near and far.

Thank you for believing in our work and your commitment to Salvation Farms’ future.

In community,
Kelly Dolan
