Salvation Farms has recently been blessed with the diligent
assistance of Sterling College student Julie Almeter. Sterling
belongs to a program known as the “Work College Consortium”
which offers students the potential to hold a “work
college job” in exchange for tuition credit. Salvation
Farms has been fortunate to be involved with the program,
offering “work college positions” that assist
Salvation Farms. Julie is engaged with us through the work
program and has been a great addition to the project, offering
help with everything from gleaning, delivering, event assistance,
recipient surveying, to administrative assistance. Salvation
Farms has benefited greatly from Julie’s help, but we
also know that Julie has benefited as well – something
we find very important. In Julie’s words, “My
role in this community has changed – I feel deeper roots
here. I feel like I contribute more than “being a seasonal
student.” [This project] brings me closer to the community,
closer to local food systems/farmers, and the donation sites.”

During the summer of 2006, Salvation Farms hosted an intern
from Sterling College. Salvation Farms and Wild Branch Valley
Farm – one of our participating farms – joined
together forming a collaborative internship for Luis Arbolay.
Luis, originally from Puerto Rico, spent 10 weeks interning
with Salvation Farms and Wild Branch Valley Farm in Craftsbury.
We really enjoyed working with Luis! His never ending enthusiasm
to work together to complete tasks was a great source of motivation.
He took pride in working in the gardens at the Wild Branch
Valley Farm and was honored to help Salvation Farms fulfill
its mission. Thanks Luis for your great help and sharing your
warm spirit with us.
After his first few weeks of interning, here is what Luis
had to say about his experience ~ |

Salvation Farms is pleased to have had the involvement of
Sofia Belenky throughout the summer of 2006. Sofia volunteered
with Salvation Farms to learn more about hunger and methods
for alleviating hunger, a topic she chose for a two-year
study required by Cabot High School. Sofia also spent time
working with the Vermont Foodbank in South Barre to meet
her requirements. Her assistance was a blessing on afternoons
at High Mowing Seeds in their trial gardens. She was quiet,
thoughtful, and very pleasant as she quickly got to work
and appeared at ease with her gleaning tasks. Her independent
focus and personal interest made her a great fit as a volunteer.
Thanks Sophia! |

Salvation
Farms worked throughout the past year with Josh Wilcox,
a Sterling College Senior. Josh has offered his skills and
personal resources to assist us with our Spring fundraising
event and celebration planning and prep. Many times Josh
accompanied our directors gleaning at both Pete’s
Greens and High Mowing Seeds during the summer of 2006.
His intense interest in finding solutions to problems that
impact our environment as well as active problem solving
makes him a great fit here at Salvation Farms. Thanks for
all of your wonderful help Josh! Good luck in all you do!
