Host Description:

Salvation Farms is a citizen-based, non-profit project advised and fiscally sponsored by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT). The project mission is to harvest excess farm produce, making it available to Vermonters in need. As a cost free resource available to farmers and food sites, Salvation Farms provides volunteer crews for salvaging farm surplus and arranges storage and distribution of fresh food donations. Donation recipients consist of local emergency food sites, educational and care giving institutions, retirement communities, non-profits, and the Vermont Foodbank. Salvation Farms considers “Vermonters in need” to include those who are food insecure and/or nutritionally insecure.

Work Involved:

Salvation Farms interns will be involved in gleaning harvests. This involves volunteer management and education. Gleaning exposes intern to many area farms, community places, locally grown crops and harvesting techniques. There is opportunity to volunteer at some of our donation sites. If an intern has a vehicle she/he may be asked to deliver donations. Mileage reimbursement may be available.

Administrative tasks:office correspondence, outreach, promotional events, and follow-ups will also be assigned to an intern. Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs is very helpful. Out of the box thinking and new ideas are welcomed. Personal drive and enthusiasm a must.

Interns will be involved with developing our new EDD Garden. Maintaining this Education, Demonstration, and Donation Garden will be part of the daily tasks of any intern who lives on-site. We are integrating the EDD Garden into our educational outreach goals and greater mission. Unique opportunities to assist with workshops and to manage volunteers in this space.

A student choosing to do this internship will be asked to do many varied agricultural related tasks and projects. However, the student is welcome to find a special component of the internship to focus on as long as it fits into the overall vision of the project and the daily needs are met. Interns will work closely with the director and other volunteer organizers, but will also be expected to work independently. We are dedicated to learning through experience and engaging in open communication. This internship will be a good experience for anyone interested in producing food, addressing production excess, utilizing our valuable local resources, and working at a grassroots level. This is appropriate for those valuing sustainable agriculture, social responsibility, as well as non-profit work.
